CBC to rebroadcast The Hip's final concert

Its been 10 years since the band played its last concert - an iconic moment in Canadian culture

Ten years after one of the most unforgettable nights in Canadian music history, fans will once again have the chance to experience The Tragically Hip's final concert together.

On Aug. 22, CBC will rebroadcast the band's legendary farewell performance from Kingston, Ontario, and is encouraging theatres, music venues, community centres and other public spaces across the country to host watch parties including the Huntsville Royal Canadian Legion.

The original concert took place on Aug. 20, 2016, during The Tragically Hip's Man Machine Poem tour. It became far more than a concert after lead singer Gord Downie revealed he had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Millions of Canadians tuned in as the band closed out its final tour in an emotional performance that united the country.

To mark the 10th anniversary, the rebroadcast will coincide with the release of a new live album featuring performances from the farewell tour. Communities across Canada are also organizing public screenings and anniversary events, with some raising funds for the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, continuing Downie's legacy of promoting reconciliation and Indigenous education.

For millions of Canadians, the 2016 Kingston broadcast stands as a watershed moment in the nation's cultural history. CBC’s 10th anniversary presentation gives original viewers a chance to revisit that unforgettable night while passing down the band's final, iconic bow to a new generation of music lovers.
