New Music Monday: Five Tracks Bringing New Energy to The Countdown

A newly released Mötley Crüe demo, fresh singles from Kings of Leon and The War on Drugs, and rising acts The Band Feel and Pump Action lead this week’s musical lineup

As September moves deeper into fall, this week’s Countdown takes a trip through several different sides of rock and alternative music. There is the rootsy warmth of The Band Feel, the riff-heavy attack of Pump Action, a previously unreleased piece of Mötley Crüe history, the expansive sound of The War on Drugs, and a more reflective new direction from Kings of Leon. Together, the five tracks move from emerging artists to established bands while keeping the focus firmly on guitars, strong songwriting and music with some character.

THE BAND FEEL – "Thousand Mornings"

The Band Feel open this week’s Countdown with "Thousand Mornings," a roots-driven rock track from the Nashville-based group’s 2026 album What Of Now. The song has become a regular part of the band’s live set, and guitarist Tyler Armstrong recently spoke about recording its featured guitar solo with a 1959 Gibson Flying V. The result is a warm, organic rock performance that leans on the band’s musicianship rather than elaborate production. "Thousand Mornings" also gives listeners a good introduction to a group that has been building its profile through extensive touring and a growing catalogue of original material. 

Pump Action – "Supernova"

Pump Action bring a much harder edge to the lineup with "Supernova," a riff-heavy rock track released in August. The song first attracted wider attention as the group’s entry in NPR’s 2026 Tiny Desk Contest, where NPR highlighted Pump Action among its favourite submissions from more than six thousand entries. The band’s official site continues to feature "Supernova" as its Tiny Desk Contest performance, while the studio single runs just under four minutes. It is a direct, guitar-driven track that shows why the group has been turning heads among listeners looking for newer riff-oriented rock.

Mötley Crüe – "Nobody Knows What It’s Like To Be Lonely"

This week's Mötley Crüe selection comes with a substantial piece of rock history attached to it. "Nobody Knows What It’s Like To Be Lonely" is a previously unreleased demo recorded in March 1981, during the band’s earliest period. More than four decades later, the recording has been officially released as part of the group’s Too Fast For Love 45th anniversary project. The rougher early recording captures Mötley Crüe before the polished production and massive reputation that would follow, making the track an unusual glimpse into the band’s formative years. 

The War On Drugs – "Who’s That"

The War On Drugs return with "Who’s That," their first new studio recording since 2022. Written and produced by Adam Granduciel, the track builds gradually around layered guitars, keyboards and a full rhythm section before expanding into the widescreen sound that has become one of the band's signatures. Granduciel has said the song was written in about ten minutes between his morning coffee and taking his child to school, and described it as an attempt to confront anxiety, depression and self-doubt while trying to accept the things that cannot be controlled. The result is an atmospheric, reflective track that still carries plenty of forward momentum. 

Kings Of Leon – "My Whole World"

Kings of Leon close out this week's Countdown with "My Whole World," the first taste of their upcoming tenth studio album, O My Beloved. The song takes a noticeably more intimate approach, reflecting on family, memories and the passage of time. Caleb Followill began working on the song after a foot injury left him at home while the band was preparing new music and touring plans. The forthcoming album is the band's first full-length record produced entirely by Kings of Leon, and the group has described the project as a more personal look at the experiences that shaped them. "My Whole World" sets that tone with a relaxed, reflective sound rather than a big arena-rock production.

From a 1981 Mötley Crüe demo finally seeing an official release to brand-new material from Kings of Leon and The War On Drugs, the five tracks show just how much ground contemporary rock can cover.
